Don’t worry, this isn’t (really) about coronavirus. Most important thing to take from this is that if you are a disabled horror fan, I want to hear from you!
I’ve been a bit quiet on this front for a while – other than lots of band interviews. I guess the #DLGRL2021 campaign has taken more of a front-seat recently, and it has certainly been the easiest thing to do. Answering the millions of band promo emails I get sent with an interview request for my side project and asking loads of cool ladies interesting questions is by far more straight forward than planning and writing essays.
Don’t know what I’m talking about? Check this out: https://www.change.org/p/get-a-woman-to-headline-download-festival or find us on Facebook and Instagram @DLGRl2021
I’m also working on putting a playlist together, which is a work in progress that you can find here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4penuQ5Q5yIw388DQ1PGB2?si=5S1On0qlRDuSm1DalUpnQg
[I’ve voiced my opinions on this campaign countless times, and gotten a ridiculous amount of backlash for it each time, so if you’re interested, please look elsewhere for my arguments about why Download Festival should book a female headliner.]
Other than that, I secured my first piece of printed press recently, for the fabulous Bang Bang Romeo, who I represent in my work with Fifth Element PR. The interview can be found in the Lesbian Visibility Week edition of Diva Magazine (NB: I DIDN’T WRITE OR CONDUCT THE INTERVIEW. MY NAME APPEARS NOWHERE IN THE MAGAZINE. I JUST MADE IT HAPPEN. A lot of people seemed confused about this. Look up what PR is.)
In addition to this, I am really fucking proud to announce that, along with my colleagues, we raised £1300 for Cancer Research back in February, as part of the London Winter Run! My medal finally arrived in the post (there was a storm the weekend of the run so we all completed the 10k in our own time) and it finally feels real! This was a really important cause for obvious reasons so I’m pretty proud.
You can still donate! Here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/fifth-element-winter-run
Another mad thing that happened was that I was named in Rachel Rose’s Jewish Women Leading in the UK. This was a really great initiative, designed to be a resource instead of ranked list, and it was really lovely to be counted amongst so many other amazingly inspiring women. You can see the whole article here: https://medium.com/@rachelrose_52950/the-young-jewish-women-leading-in-the-uk-5b94839b012f
I have loads more interviews in the pipeline, and in addition, a really deep dive planned into the representation of disabilities in horror films. If you are a disabled horror fan, I want to hear from you! Please get in touch on Twitter @thebechdelbitch or use the contact form on the website!
Basically what I’m saying is; I’ve been busy, there’s more stuff coming, but I’m also reeeeeallyyyy leaning into the reclusive lifestyle which lockdown allows me. Lots of long walks, reading, sitting in my garden and listening to SO MUCH music. You’ve already heard it a million times, but give yourself time. You don’t have to be productive during a global pandemic.
Want to read some more opinions? I’ve been writing a lot of music reviews for some blogs, which you can check out here: https://www.bringthenoiseuk.com/author/rosiesolomon and here: https://distortedsoundmag.com/author/rosiesolomon/
’til next time, you can find me sitting in the sunshine listening to Chromatica on repeat.
